Why should you undertake a Training Needs Analysis (TNA)?

For companies that are big or small (or somewhere in the middle), their success depends upon the skill of their employees. These skills need to be established, monitored, developed and nurtured to continue to meet the needs of the company and their customers. Often this skill development is overlooked and funding is put into capital expenditure. To counter this training managers have had to be selective about undertaking training and ensure that training selected is as appropriate and relevant as possible.

What tools can we use to assist us in making informed training choices?

Tools to make informed choices can vary- they could simply be chatting with employees to get their input as to which training they receive or could involve looking at what training similar businesses are undertaking, however the most reliable is a TNA- Training Needs Analysis which combines several proven methods.

What does a TNA do?

A training needs analysis (TNA) identifies and analyses the gap between existing skills of workers and the required skills of workers to be able to undertake a particular role, function or job. This assist’s managers, supervisors and owners to make informed training decisions.

Benefits of undertaking a TNA

These can vary however the most common benefits include:

  • An increase in productivity
  • A safer workplace and less lost time injuries (LTIs)
  • Compliance with safety and other relevant legislation
  • Facilitating a positive company culture
  • Increasing company capacity and making the business more competitive

Some benefits may be seen straight away, whereas others will develop over time.

How do we undertake the TNA?

To undertake a TNA we follow a structured process listed below:

  1. Data Collection
  2. Data Analysis
  3. Drafting the TNA for feedback from stakeholders
  4. Finalising the TNA

Data Collection includes the following:

  • Document Reviews (SWMS, Policies and Procedures, Job Roles, KPIs)
  • Legislation Reviews (WHS Act, WHS Regulations)
  • Worker Interviews
  • Job Observations
  • Surveys and Questionaires
  • Current training records

Data Analysis includes:

  • Quantitative and Qualitative analysis
  • Determining current competency levels
  • Identifying skill gaps

Drafting the TNA involves forming the TNA and receiving stakeholder feedback to ensure training views align.  Once this has been completed the TNA can be finalised.
