Why are Manufacturer Specifications So Good?

One common question I am asked when training asbestos related courses is how often the respirators filters should be changed. My response is always the same- “It depends on what the manufacturer specifies and how often and in what environment the respirator is being used”.

The most common respirator used in the asbestos removal industry for non-friable asbestos is the Sundström SR100 used with a particulate filter. The manufacturer specifies that for this filter cartridge it be replaced every 2-4 weeks or earlier if the change in breathing resistance becomes noticeable.

For work at heights we have all seen users of harnesses put the harness on backwards or upside down or fail to correctly fit the harness. In the event of a fall the harness would not work in its intended way and a serious injury or even death could occur.

It is not just a safety issue using equipment, PPE or tools in a way that the manufacturer did not intend but also an economic issue- as use in an incorrect way will lead to shorter lifespan and profitability will suffer.

When equipment, tools and PPE are used the user should have read the manufacturer specifications and they should adhere to them. Knowing your equipment and how to correctly use it will prevent issues arising.

Benefits to the user include:

  • Safer working environment meaning getting home in the same way you went in
  • Better understanding of workplace risks

Benefits to employers include:

  • Decrease in lost time injuries
  • A increased safety culture and workers feeling that they are respected and involved in safety
  • Longer lifespan for equipment saving costs from constantly replacing gear
  • Better workplace morale as workers are working in a safe manner

At Pro Safety and Training our training always includes and emphasises using gear as per the manufacturer’s specifications.
