Workplaces all over Australia are using a variety of control measures to manage the risk of falling from heights.
These control measures fall into different systems. These being:
Fall Prevention Devices
Fall prevention devices is any equipment that is designed to prevent a fall for temporary work at heights, and once in place does not require any further adjustment by workers using the device.
Fall prevention devices include:
Work Positioning
Work positioning systems involves equipment that enables a person to work supported in a harness in tension in such a way that a fall is prevented.
This includes:
Fall Arrest Systems
Fall arrest systems involve equipment that is designed to catch a worker if they fall. Fall arrest systems should only be used if it is not reasonably practicable to use higher level controls.
This system includes:
Ladders
Ladders should only be used as a means of access and egress from a work area. With ladders requiring 3 points of contact they should really only be used for light duty, short duration work that can be carried out safely on the ladder.
