How To Dump Asbestos Correctly?

Despite large fines and risk to public health, contractors and individuals are still dumping asbestos illegally. Last week asbestos was dumped near a school in Seven Hills, not only does this put the public at risk but the local council has to use tax payer dollars to fund the clean-up.

Keep the following things to keep in mind when disposing of asbestos:

  • Asbestos is a form of regulated waste
  • It is illegal to dump asbestos in household bins
  • It is illegal to recycle asbestos or illegally dump asbestos products
  • Asbestos must be disposed of at a licensed asbestos waste disposal site
  • It is illegal to sell, store or give away asbestos
  • Asbestos kills thousands of people a year- DISPOSE OF IT CORRECTLY

So with the above factors in mind what options have we got for dumping asbestos in Queensland?

The below is purely guidance and more specific information can be found here.

Scenario 1: You are a licensed builder with a B class license completing a bathroom renovation. In total you have about 30m² of non-friable asbestos and contaminated waste to dispose of.

Solution: Simply find a local provider that can deliver an asbestos skip bin to you. You simply complete the removal of the asbestos, place all waste into the skip bin and seal as per the asbestos removal code of practice. The skip bin company will then pick up the skip bin and give you a copy of the waste tracking certificate.

This option is excellent for contractors completing the odd asbestos removal job and keeps costs relatively low.

Scenario 2: You are an asbestos removal company removing large amounts of friable and non-friable asbestos. It is too costly to have individual skip bins for each job so you need a different option.

Solution: Apply for an authority to transport regulated waste in a vehicle and accurately record and submit all waste tracking information. The application for applying for an environmental authority can be found here. The asbestos waste is transported to licensed dumping facilities that take asbestos and you complete the waste tracking certificates.

This solution is an important aspect of an asbestos removal company, as it keeps disposal costs low.

Scenario 3: You are a small business completing small amounts of non-friable asbestos removal.

Solution: You are able to transport waste to a licensed facility as long as the waste is under 250kg and it is for a non-commercial purpose. Some good examples of non-commercial waste transport are listed here.

These solutions are Queensland specific and purely guidance, please make sure that you consult with your local regulator for more information.
