Do I need a confined space permit if I am entering a confined space?

Do I need a confined space permit if I am entering a confined space?

Confined spaces are a hazard that can change extremely quickly and can quickly turn deadly. To reduce our risk when working in confined spaces there are several control measures which can be implemented such as:

  • Atmospheric testing (gas testing)
  • Ventilation such as blower units and extraction fans
  • Training such as our one and 2 day courses
  • Safe work practices
  • Standby teams and hauling systems to remove injured workers from confined space quickly
  • Signage and barricading
  • Risk assessments
  • Communication systems such as 2 way radios

One control measure which is constantly overlook is a confined space entry permit. At Pro Safety and Training we see confined space entry permits as a critical checklist to ensure working in confined spaces is safe for all workers.

Not only are confined space permits a great way to document entries and control measures but they are actually the law.

Section 67 of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 specifies:

67 Confined space entry permit

(1) A person conducting a business or undertaking at

a workplace must not direct a worker to enter a

confined space to carry out work unless the person

has issued a confined space entry permit for the

work.

Maximum penalty:

In the case of an individual—$6 000.

In the case of a body corporate—$30 000.

We ensure that our confined space entry training covers the permit system and our practical training involves using permits for a confined space entry. To contact us regarding our high quality and enjoyable confined space entry training please call us on 1300 336 003.
