Asbestos still being used in Australia

Asbestos bans began in the 1980s. Since 1985 bans were implemented by most jurisdictions and include:

  • All mining of raw asbestos
  • The manufacture, importation and installation of products containing crocidolite and amosite

Asbestos products and their use were completely banned in Australia on 31st December 2003.

Despite these bans Asbestos is still making its way into the country and being used in industry despite the severe health risks.

The following small sample of cases are a concern to workers, employers and the public:

  • Flooring containing asbestos was found in 3 electrical substation in built in Melbourne last year
  • Asbestos was found to be used in 2 new electrical substations in Adelaide
  • Thousands of counterfeit brake pads were being sold to unaware buyers and car dealers last year
  • Asbestos was found in imported children’s crayons last year
  • Compound board imported into Canberra was found to contain Chrysotile

All of  these instances put people at risk of sometimes fatal respiratory diseases.

Finding asbestos being used or imported more than a decade after the ban is a real cause for concern.

Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency CEO Peter Tighe said "It's an emerging problem and it seems to be growing exponentially, as more and more products are brought into Australia, because of the wind-down of manufacturing in this country".

"What we've really got now is really an indication which could be the tip of the iceberg."

Workers, employers and the public need to arm themselves with the awareness, knowledge and skills to assist them in identifying asbestos and implementing correct controls. Pro Safety and Training delivers the following asbestos removal training:
