Prior to its total ban in 2004 asbestos containing materials (ACMs) were used in a wide range of industries. The versatile mineral was manufactured into thousands of products including wall sheeting, roofing, fencing, insulation, lagging, fire doors. vinyl floor tiles, shingles and even cigarette filters. Despite its great industrial properties, asbestos is harmful to human health and causes fatal diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer and laryngeal cancer.
